What nonprofits need to know about Form 990 and staying tax-exempt.

Keeping Your Nonprofit's Tax-Exempt Status Intact

Running a nonprofit comes with its own tax rulebook: annual Form 990 filings, state-level renewals, and unrelated business income (UBIT) all factor into whether exempt status stays in good standing. These filings fit naturally into the tax preparation and bookkeeping work we already do for clients.

990 filings, state renewals, and UBIT review, handled together for one flat rate.

Questions

Nonprofit Tax Services FAQ

What exactly is Form 990, and who has to file it?

It's the annual informational return the IRS requires from tax-exempt organizations. Depending on gross receipts and total assets, most 501(c)(3) organizations file the full Form 990, the 990-EZ, or the 990-N. Go three consecutive years without filing and tax-exempt status is revoked automatically.

What counts as Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT)?

UBIT applies when a nonprofit brings in income from a trade or business that's regularly conducted and not substantially related to its exempt purpose — advertising revenue and rental income on debt-financed property are common examples. Reviewing your revenue streams for this kind of exposure, and reporting it properly, is part of what we do.

Do you take care of state charitable registration too?

Yes. Most states require any nonprofit that solicits donations to register and renew that registration each year, and we handle it in every state where your organization operates or raises funds.

How does pricing work for this?

Flat-rate, across the board. You get an upfront fee for Form 990 preparation, state filings, and ongoing advisory, with no hourly clock running and no invoice that catches you off guard.

What if our exempt status has already been revoked?

Yes. We help with the IRS reinstatement process, including preparing Form 1023 or 1024 along with the supporting documentation needed to get exempt status restored.
